I really liked this movie ust like I have liked all the Yimou Zhang movies I have seen. It's unfortunate that some people didn't like it because they were expecting an action movie and not a period drama.
Most likely, it was advertised that way because it was more likely to sell in North America after the success of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. This was also the case with Zhang's movie Hero.
