Man, what's with Zhang Yimou these days? Granted that the production was impressive, and I can't fault Gong Li's acting. And, yeah, I did enjoy the two hours my brain took a vacation while my eyes feasted on the ostentatious set.
But this was just over the top melodrama. The fight scenes were just so-so, and tended to be a little repetitive and pointless towards the end.
