Review of Curse of the Golden Flower (2006) by Sarah W — 28 Jan 2010
Astoundingly beautiful, "Curse of the Golden Flower" is the fascinating portrait of a dysfunctional royal family that ultimately implodes. Quietly violent, disturbing, imaginative, and ultimately majestic.
..I have seen this film at least five times, and I am always struck by the most subtle details. It is rich in scope, but the film's true beauty is in its devastating dissection of humankind's lust for what cannot be.
"Golden Flower" is supurbly acted--no one does crazy/beautiful like Gong Li, and Chow Yun Fat, who can be quite amiable in a number of films, is terrifying. I love this movie!
