Review of Curse of Chucky (2013) by Josh J — 07 Oct 2013
Yes!
Chucky the killer doll is back and in top form.
After 2 miserable sequels (in my opinion the 3rd movie and 'Seed') Chucky for a while turned into a jokey, hokey element of the once proud horror genre.
I am very happy to report that Don Mancini and the rest of the crew went back and did their homework.
This 6th installment is back to having that suspenseful aspect that made the 1st movie a classic.
I was actually scared this time and boy has that not happened in a long while.
Not only that but the film has great gore to spare.
At first I was very reluctant to check this out considering it's straight-to-video and we all know how that goes for movies these days particularly horror films.
But it is above the cutting room floor than most of what's shelved out today.
It was a very smart idea to have Chucky stalk a family this time in an old house storming outside and in the middle of nowhere; that really added to the fear of having a killer doll around.
And I love that Brad Dourif still owns it as Chucky, he is this demonic playpal for life.
His new design is a big departure than what we were used to seeing him the 1st 3 films but he hasn't lost that touch of charm and killer vibe.
A couple of the characters here are still plagued by lazy writing making them irritating and waiting for them to be sliced and diced by the doll but that's always the intention in these movies.
There were also a couple minor changes that didn't sit well with me concerning Chucky but I was able to enjoy the rest of the film despite that.
There is also a very interesting reveal near the end of the film, not only was I shocked that it tied back to the 1st movie but I also liked that it managed to tie up some loose ends.
Oh and there's so many nods to the previous films that will indeed like me please die-hard fans of the franchise.
The scares are a plenty, the kills are average but still fine, the acting isn't terrible, the gore is bloody, the score is creepy and Chucky is back where he belongs...to terrify us :).
