Review of Curse of Chucky (2013) by Sao Y — 09 Oct 2013
For a direct to DVD film, this is surprisingly good. There are a lot of good things the movie has going for it. The two that stick out the most are the plot, which doesn't really get explained until the end, and the fact that this is a return to Chucky as a horror film, whereas the previous two features were more like dark comedies.
But, being a direct to video feature, it does have its flaws. The first of which, we don't see a whole lot of Chucky in action. The feature runs an hour and a half, but the first 45 minutes are all build up.
.. Now, that doesn't mean the film is boring. There are plenty of jump scares in the first half to keep one entertained, and the build up is worth it. Secondly, for the most part, Chucky looks very real this time around, although there are a few instances where he looks too fake.
Like terribly fake, but only here and there. For a direct to video film, the animation is actually decent. In the long run, this film, with just a little bit more polishing here and there, could have warranted a theatrical release, but, should the studio decide to let the series live on in the form of straight to DVD, that will suffice the fans, too.
