Review of Curse of Chucky (2013) by Thomas W — 27 Sep 2013
No to this movie. Read the title and think back 25 years ... yes, Chucky is back (again) in another sequel perfect for a Sucky Sequel Saturday Night! The demented doll returns for another slasher-fest .
.. this time with another unsuspecting family with an unknown connection to the doll's origin. Perhaps we are supposed to be excited that he is back to get some sort of revenge but it is hard to be excited for any of the characters when they are all rather lame and paper-thin giving an audience no reason to care for them.
The film feels manipulative from the beginning when the family is first introduced ... as one woman is in a wheelchair and another is an innocent child. Four other able-bodied adults are also introduced .
.. and as this is predictable (for the most part) we can all pretty much guess whom the writers believe we are supposed to be sympathetic towards ... making all others fair game. The movie has some howl-worthy lines (not necessarily a good thing) and the acting for the most part is all bottom of the barrel (even with Brad Dourif [One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest] reprising his role as the voice of Chucky AND Charles Lee Ray).
Just when one believes the film cannot take another turn for the worse -- it does, followed by three more such turns. Parts of it felt overly long (not good for a slasher flick) and it is just hard to care about these people.
Sure we shouldn't want any of them to die ... but they are so dumb they are getting killed by a doll. The doll is outsmarting them. Chucky fans may rejoice at this new movie of his; but it isn't good .
.. but none of them really have been. It is Camp ... Chucky style.
