Review of Curious George (2006) by Ali S — 08 Aug 2010
Way to destroy my childhood memories of the curious little monkey! And the worst part is, they didn't even play the cheesey little theme song from the small screen version. (Although, I must say one of the redeeming qualities of the film was the music. Josh Jackson pumped out a pretty solid soundtrack.) And what kind of morals does something like this teach? If you can't do what you promise to do, lie and avoid the outcome? And then a monkey will come and save your hide?
While the animation was very much like the drawings in the books, I really felt like this version of Curious George did not stay true to the spirit of the books at all. The books were predictable, yes, but pretty funny The film is dull and surprisingly lacking in humour. I knew that this would be a kid's movie so I shaped my expectations as such. However, surely we can give our kids better than that.
PS - I was shocked to find out that this piece of cinema took 16 years to make. 16 years and it still feels like a Saturday morning cartoon.
