Review of Cult of Chucky (2017) by Jon C — 02 Oct 2017
After 7 movies in nearly 30 years Don Mancini has crafted the finest installment yet!
'Curse of Chucky' brought the killer doll back to his roots of being creepy, and now the filmmakers have put a terrifying new spin on the franchise's history.
It's been 4 years since the events of the last film and Nica (Fiona Dourif) has been committed to a mental ward convinced she killed her whole family.
Alex Vincent is also back as Andy Barclay determined to put an end to Chucky's bloody reign of terror once and for all.
Little does he know that his lover, Tiffany whom has inhabited Jennifer Tilly's body is aiding her Lakeshore Strangler boyfriend.
There's funny slasher genre spoofing in this one as well as so many inside references fans will recognize.
The writers even insert commentary on modern methods of psychiatric treatment, the corruption of therapists, and the evolvement of serial killers getting away with what they do.
Being in a mental ward doesn't exactly help Nica deal with the fact that Chucky has supposedly returned and it taking full advantage of the patients' hysteria.
The kills are still really inventive, there's some pretty good performances, some fun returns to the earlier movies, and Brad Dourif still hasn't lost his staple as this character.
The ending is actually quite the shocker given everything we've seen up to this point; Chucky seems almost unbeatable now.
Last but not least, the post credits scene much like last time is a moment worthy of smiling in joyful nostalgia.
Something tells me that the series hasn't quite reached the finish line just yet.
For another direct-to-video sequel this feels like they're getting better and better.
Chucky is here to stay to scare as well as draw blood.
