Review of Cult of Chucky (2017) by Bill M — 27 Oct 2017
Cult Of Chucky is without doubt the strangest entry in what has become the most consistent and inventive horror franchise ever, each entry is it's own distinct creature, with bold and refreshing tonal shifts and more meta than meta plot developments, all the while Chucky emerges as possibly the greatest slasher villain ever, unlike Freddy, Michael Myers or Jason his is a proper character who changes and evolves with the movies, getting more self aware and eventually even more malicious and nasty, on top of that he is fucking hilarious too, his exchange with a mental patient in one scene here an absolute comical standout in a what is the darkest, bleakest entry yet.
The tone is as chilly as the setting, a Kubrikian cuckoo's nest of cold, stark white's and greys, beautifully set designed and way more gorgeously shot than your average horror, director and writer Don Mancini really ups his game here big time.
The other stand out element is Fiona Dourif, Daughter of Chucky himself Bard Dourif, she is just awesome, and certain developments later on allow her to really let loose and deliver a potent and really amazing performance, she rocks.
This is also gonna be a mindblower for fans, there are suprises and twists that are jaw dropping and some things that turn the whole franchise on it's head forever. Plus its easily the most outlandishly gory and graphic of any of the movies, there are some truly stunningly nasty moments.
As far as im concerned they can jsut keep making these frequently unpredictable, demented, clever films forever, long live Chucky!
