Review of Cujo (1983) by Julian T — 01 Dec 2011
Despite a mostly underwhelming overall plotline, 'Cujo' manages to be a fairly effective suspense/horror film. Its hard to give too many points for originality, as its pretty much 'Jaws' with a dog. It doesn't do anything particularly great, but it doesn't drop the ball anywhere either.
The acting is solid, although the script isn't very good. My main issue with the film is that its down periods are painfully boring and last far too long. I don't care about Dee Walace having an affair, or the lawsuit against the cereal company and I doubt that anyone who popped this movie on cares either. This is an excellent example of how difficult it can be to adapt a short story like this to feature length, because you really have to stretch and grasp for things that have little buisness being in the story at all.
The attack scenes are what drives the movie, not the character development. Fortunately, these attack scenes are great. They are edge of your seat entertainment that will definetly have you yelling at the TV at parts. The dog is hugely intimidating and is played on very well by director Teague.
If there were more of these parts and less of the mega-dry development portions of the film, the three star rating could be a 4. As it stands, it is a pretty decent flick that offers some serious tension if you can stay awake through the other parts.
