Review of Cube Zero (2004) by Bryan G — 22 Feb 2005
Due to forces against me, my wishes to see I Heart Huckabees today didn?t come true. Instead, I got the chance to see Cube Zero. This is a prequel to the original film, and was supposed to make up for the lacking second film.
More or less, this film follows the same storyline. A group of strangers awaken in a strange maze made of cubes that readjust themselves every so often, making escape difficult. Also, some rooms are filled with traps that range from being sliced to death to being burned alive.
This time though, we get to see the people responsible for the cube maze. I thought this would be a neat addition to the movie series, but alas I was wrong. It takes away from the movie?s mystery. And also the fact that all of the people controlling this thing seem to be rejects from the bad villain department doesn?t help much either.
I do think this film is slightly better than the second film, but doesn?t come close to the first one. I don?t really think the first film is all that great either, but stands high above these two films. Maybe if this film had the new set of strangers meet up with the cast from the second film, and had them try to find their way into the first film, that would have been interesting to see.
The film does have some pretty cool death scenes, and that is about all that is good in the film. Lame acting, bad dialogue and a music score that is just standard horror fare make this movie forgettable. If you are a fan of the series, then I guess you can see it. Other than that, don?t worry about this film..
