Review of Cube Zero (2004) by Aaron T — 19 Nov 2007
Any sequel/prequel that does not in any way involve the original production team in any way, I see as being purely interpretive. This is one person's idea of what the background story is, and it is an interesting one at that.
This gives background information on what the Cube may be all about, and the whole reason for no one ever being able to remember anything about how they got there.
They brought one of the writers from Hypercube on to write and direct this film, but thank God it suffers from few of the flaws of that awful film. It takes us back to Earth and brings much of the simplicity back to the series, which is what it needed.
I liked the idea of going into the facility of who is watching over the characters being "tested" on, and even going a little higher up. I also liked that we still never found out exactly who is pulling all the strings. While we did meet one higher up person, he did have someone he answered to.
I like the interpretation of the complex lab rat program in all of its various forms.
It's still not a great film. It suffers from a horrible lack of character development, even in its limited capacity, and the acting is nothing to get excited over.
But it's a very interesting interpretation all the same. if you liked the first film, skip Hypercube and see this, it's worth a watch.
