Review of Cube Zero (2004) by Bruno L — 21 Aug 2010
â??Cubeâ?? is a bit awkward but ultimately memorable sci-fi art flicks from the 90's. It's one of those films one can see many times over and still be intriqued by the mere ambience and concept of the puzzle: a group of seemingly random people wake up inside an odd box and try to find their way out. The sequel â??Cube2â?? was a horrible disappointment, taking the exact same concept and watering it down as much as was possible. The acting was bad and the atmosphere very uninspiring. â??Cube Zeroâ?? feels like an improvement from that. It's done more in the tone of the original, and the pointo of view is different. A large part of the film is about people who are observing the abductees, and some of the revelations this offers are actually interesting to a follower of the franchise.
In the end â??Cube Zeroâ?? is a worthwile addition after â??Cube2,â?? but the best way to go would have been to leave the original without sequels or prequels. Because as interesting as this latest piece of the story at times is, it's still very obviously clumsy in the dialog and acting department. And tonewise more of a fill-up film for cable TV than a piece of cinematic art.
