Review of Cube 2: Hypercube (2002) by Matt M — 07 Apr 2009
I finally got round to watching this. The first is a deserved cult classic, and the second deserves a place alongside it. There's less emphasis on the characters, but the film more than compensates by introducing more abstract mathematics, parallel realities, and moving walls of translucent gelatinous goo that burn people alive.
At points the film is surely a conscious parody of itself, with ever escalating levels of ridiculousness as the parallel realities grow more bizarre and then converge on one another, resulting in people seeing copies of themselves, 3 fights between the same people taking place simultaneously, and multiple deaths for the same character.
Just enough is explained to the audience, and the whole mystery is certainly not 'ruined' as some have suggested.
