Review of Cube (1998) by Andrew W — 29 Mar 2009
Underrated thriller that could walk circles around the "Saw" franchise, a series which probably benefited from this earlier, better film's concept and direction.
Five people find themselves imprisoned in a strange, labyrinthine prison system. The only thing they all have in common is an almost definite sense of innocence - or lack of guilt - forcing them to question what brought them to such a situation, the nature of the world, and, especially, the nature of their fellow prisoners.
The inventiveness of the Cube's deathtraps is ingenious, and both the dialogue and acting (though not spectacular) is lean and effective. All of the characterization unfolds naturally from the characters' words and, since there are absolutely no external shots, there is no cheap plot gimmicks (a la "Saw") to distract from the action and tension within the claustrophobic confines of the Cube.
