Review of Cube (1998) by Vincent G — 11 May 2014
Vincenzo Natali's insanely creative sci-fi/horror film Cube was made way ahead of its time. This may be the movie that inspired all subsequent Syfy original films. It follows the same basic B-movie style, but is actually incredibly clever and produced with care.
The script, written by Natali, Andre Bijelic, and Graeme Manson (who has appropriately worked on Orphan Black in recent years), is inspired in ideas, but lacking in character development and dialogue, most of which is just silly.
Natali does a great job of keeping the audience in suspense throughout and never giving too much away at any given time. Bottom line, for all of its flaws, Cube is a groundbreaking sci-fi film that deserves to be respected as such.
I'd recommend this to any and every sci-fi/horror fan.
