Review of Cube (1998) by John O — 26 Apr 2015
This is another film with an intriguing idea but terrible execution. The characters were surprisingly not too bad but the guy at the end going insane and murdering everyone was so uncharacteristic. And too many characters died for it to leave a satisfying ending.
The young woman played by Nicole De Boer should have also survived. Apart from that, there were too many unanswered questions. Why were they there? who put them there? What was the cube anyway? none of these questions were answered and I don't even think the writers even knew.
There are times when it's better to leave something a mystery like the briefcase in Pulp fiction but when you revolve the film around these questions and even having the characters constantly asking them, you can't just have the one survivor walk into the light, then cut to black.
Was it an experiment? a test? nobody knows including the writers.
