Review of Cub (2014) by Renzo V — 04 Nov 2014
"KILLING BOY SCOUTS".
- 'Welp' (or 'Cub' in English) is a 2014 Belgian slasher film, directed by Jonas Govaerts. The movie is a tribute to the old-school slasher films such as 'Friday the 13th' or 'Sleepaway Camp', with a sniff of 'Saw' added to it. I have to say that I enjoyed the film .It starts out with every cliché in the book, as a group of young people camp in a wood where a killer is out for blood, but then doesn't follow the normal horror-rules. There is a good balance between humor and horror. The ending could have been slightly better as the viewer is left with a couple of questions. But as a genre-fan and a Belgian, I stand by 'Welp'. Starring Stef Aerts (Adem), Evelien Bosmans (Marina), Titus De Voogdt (Steve + Sky) and Maurice Luijten. Someone in the mood for camping?
Peter (Aerts) and Chris (De Voogdt) get their group of boy scouts ready for a camping trip in the Belgian Ardennes. After telling them a campfire tale about a wild child named Kai, they get on the road in a old army truck. Along the way, they pick up Jasmijn (Bosmans), who will be responsible for preparing the meals. Arriving in the Ardennes, the group discovers that two troubled brothers are occupying their camping spot. After an argument Peter decides to drive into the nearby woods to find themselves a better place. Unknowingly they enter the territory of dangerous murderer, who booby trapped the place. It doesn't take long before one of the children, Sam (Luijten), begins to notice a person watching them. He believes that person is Kai...
