Review of Cthulhu (2008) by Angie N — 16 Apr 2009
This is just a very loose interpretation of the Shadow Over Innsmouth (really, just make a Shadow Over Innsmouth movie already and get it over with!) but it seemed that the movie focused more on small town closed-mindedness and tried to make some sort of statement along those regards rather than just tell its story.
Having a gay protagonist didn't seem at all like the gimmick it sounds and actually served, albeit minutely, aspects of the plot (though I think he was immensely confused over his identity). As for what the movie was actually about.
.. well... I long for a Lovecraft movie that truly captures it and not just another retelling of Shadow... because, truthfully, the story is good and all, but there's so many others that the guy wrote that would make very interesting movies.
Or at least more Lovecraft-themed movies such as John Carpenter's The Thing or In The Mouth Of Madness. The acting in this movie is hit or miss... at times it's very realistic... others, just plain bad.
I will give it props, however, for not just being a mindless gorefest and trying to tell a compelling story... it's just a story that's been told one to many times... and for those who are familiar with Lovecraft's stories.
.. you already know what's going to happen before it even begins.
