Review of C.S.A.: The Confederate States of America (2005) by Justin S — 11 Jun 2007
This is a mockumentary that imagines how the 19th & 20th centuries might have unfolded if the South had won the Civil War. Maybe Dave Chapelle spoiled me by setting such high standards for incisive comedy about race in America, but this thing barely elicited a chuckle from me.
The movie certainly draws some important parallels, and the "commercials" (while being too far over the top to be funny) expose parts of our history of race that some would rather we forget, but overall this is too ham-handed to be funny and too convoluted to be genuinely incisive.
