Review of C.S.A.: The Confederate States of America (2005) by Allison R — 20 Mar 2008
Playing a historical what-if game is always dangerous given the utter unpredictability of social and political movement. This film takes on the provocative topic(especially in a place like Gettysburg where Confederate flags are nearly omnipresent) of what exactly would have happened had the Confederacy won.
Ultimately, this film is spotty in its moments of interest but when it is truly relevant it is an extremely effective satire. Of course, one could make a thousand arguments to undermine the historical accuracy of their what-if situation, and definitely in an effective way (the slave economy, for instance, was bound to collapse) but its accuracy as a reflection of our own racism is hard to protest.
