Review of Cry Freedom (1987) by Robert S — 30 Sep 2008
Richard Attenborough returns to the historical epic with Cry Freedom, the story of a friendship that shaped the face of a country. As with Gandhi, we don't get to explore as much as we could, but what is there is fantastic.
Denzel Washington plays Stephen Biko, South African activist and Apartheid protester, and Kevin Kilne plays Donald Woods, a white journalist who risks his life and career so that Biko's message can be heard.
Tragic, powerfu, and thought-provoking, this is a good primer for those who want to know the man who lived by a simple motto: Better to die for an idea that will live than to live for an idea that will die.
