Review of Cry-Baby (1990) by Jess M — 10 Aug 2009
This movie I have to admit was a little diappointment. I mean I'm only a human being, who cannot resist Johnny Depp in the manner of seeing his movies. I have in a matter of fact, never met anyone who claimed they didn't like Johnny Depp. So of course I had to see this movie as well.
It's makes me a little sad that it didn't turn out better then this. I mean I really wanted to like it and tried hard to only see the good parts in it, but neverless I have to diss it (one has to be honest, right?!).
Set in the 1950s, Allison belongs to the squares and falls for Wade (nicknamed Cry-baby) who belongs to the bad gang. Allison's grandmother strongly disaproves in her grandchild seeing that kind of boys, but that doesn't stop Allison from attending at the bad gang's own talent show, just to see Cry-baby sing.
So when Allison and Cry-baby gets together, there are conflicts between the "squares" and the "bad gang".
The party gets out of bounds and Cry-baby ends up in jail.
I have a problem of chategorising this movie. I can't really call this a musical, since none of the main characters is singing for real, but is dubbed. Perhaps I can call this a bad comedy, wannabe- musical, Grease-inspired movie.
The gags have a very low standard and get sillier and sillier as the time goes. The "swedish" girl just took the price!
I accept that bad comedies are usually playing on stereotypes, but this is not a swedish stereotype unless you cannot seperate Austria and Sweden.
It was fun to see a young Johnny Depp and Ricki Lake (as Cry-baby's pregnant sister), though. And there were some really nice doo-wop music.
But this movie unfortunately doesn't turn out so much better (or least worse) then Grease 2!
