Review of Cry-Baby (1990) by Leona B — 12 Dec 2012
Loved this film! Let me just say that right off, so we can get down to business. The only reason it's not getting the full five stars (which it really deserves) is because of Amy Locane, who's acting at times was utterly painful to watch.
But other than that, the film is a hilarious spoof/homage to the myriad of teen-angst driven culture, an in particular films, of the mid fifties to early sixties. I'm not really a huge fan of John Waters, but this film, I've loved since it was realsed onto home video.
And I would've loved it had I got to see in the cinemas, however, when my older sister went to see it, my mother would not allow me to go with her, as she felt the film was too mature for me. I was 7 years old at that time.
But I remember being so jealous of my sister when she came home from the cinema, bragging about how awesome it was, and rubbing it in that I didn't get to go see it...typical sister stuff! I love the satire, I love the music, I love the style (I have a soft spot for rockabilly, and this film oozes it).
And can I just say, it was a stroke of genius to have a hillbilly Iggy Pop scrubbing his naked ol' butt in a washtub outside of his dilapadated house! The cast of characters couldn't be more outrageous and that's what's so great about them.
Being from Kentucky, I can appreciate Hillbilly Camp, and this film does it. Water's could've been insulting, but he knew his comedy, and how to keep things humourous and still edgy. It's an old film, and if you're on here reading this, you've probably already seen it, but if you haven't, please, do yourself a favour and find this thing! It's amazing.
