Review of Cruising (1980) by Nikki D — 02 Jan 2008
After 25 years, popular culture and society is finally catching up to the content in this film. Cruising shares similar charactertistics with Basic Instinct, in that it was deemed homophobic at the time of release.
What bullshit. The film is set in the leather S&M New York underground: it uses this backdrop to tell a story, one audiences have likely never seen. The movie is far from perfect, but it is fascinating and giddily dirty.
Friedkin is a master stylist and uses subliminal imagery and auditory effects to draw us in deeper into this underworld.
