Review of Cruising (1980) by Christopher P — 15 Jan 2008
Wow. This is a film to be reckoned with, and it is impossible to rate it. It was derailed by protests from the gay community in the West Village during filming, and further warped by MPAA demands ("there aren't enough X's in the alphabet" was said of the original cut), this film pretty much exemplifies the too often used adjective "problematic.
" Hard to watch. Poor sound mixing. Plot holes. Inconclusive ending. Questionable acting performance from Al Pacino. A conflation of violence and masculinity in the context of gay leather culture in the late 70s.
A terrible film you should definitely see.
