Review of Cruel Intentions (1999) by Rini I — 24 Jul 2009
Basically, Cruel Intentions Part I is an old movie. I canât remember the last time I saw it but it is definitely a great movie. Itâs different from love stories that Iâve seen though.
I donât like the ending. I wish it would be more happy but then again, life.
Is unpredictable. It does show Sebastianâs love for Annette though. Thatâs very heart touching.
Basically, itâs a story about a popular playboy who is good looking or at least thinks he is and is wealthy. Heâs also very cocky, rude, pretentious, etc He's also friendly.
He can get anyone he wants, anything he wants and usually can sleep with any girl he wants.
Being the very good actor and sweet mouthed man that he is, he gets all the girls he dates. He does not want any of them.
But enjoys the challenge, the thrill of having them and getting them. Itâs all for fun in his opinion. He lists them down and writes.
Them in a journal as part of his collection. In this movie, Sebastian is a very cold, heartless person.
Oneday, he hears about a girl named Annette who is virgin and does not want to lose her virginity with just any guy. She said she has to do it for loveâ¦true love...after marriage. He and his sister made a bet that he could not nail her. This was a challenge to Sebastian. He wanted to win. He did not love her and never cared about her. He just wanted the thrill of having Annette as one his conquests. Just an experience.
He tried hard but did not get a chance to. Finally, by bribing Annetteâs friend and acting finally worked out for him. Annette agreed to do it with him. But the weird part was, the first time he could not and did not want to do it when she agreed. Finally, he did not care about sex anymore. He finally fell in love. Innocence won. Annetteâs good intentions, Anneteâs innocence purity won his heart and he was never the same ever again. He began to look at life differently and felt differently. Finally, Sebastian became a changed man.
For me, there are 2 ways to look at this movie.
1) Sebastian is heartless, disloyal, a liar, and evil.
Or.
2) Sebastian is just someone who does not know what he wants and explores life in the way that he knows and wants freely. It's just a matter of personal choices.
He likes to enjoy himself, using the wealth, power and looks that he has to get himself laid and lots of women. The women not knowing this, thinks itâs love and a potential long term relationship. You can see that as being heartless or not. But when a woman willingly has sex with a guy the first time they meet or in a few days or a few months, and thinks itâs going to be endless love until the day they die, just because heâs sweet and just because they had sex, she must be dreaming so I think in the movie, depending on how you see it, you can say Sebastian is just a human being.
Learning and going through the process of what it is to really love through his experiences in life. Slowly, he gets bored of all the girls he can easily have and can easily woo, can easily date and most of all, can easily have sex with. So the existence of a girl who was hard to have sex with, appealed to him very much.
Heâs not bad. Heâs just not in love with anyone so he can never have just one woman.
