Review of Crows Zero (2007) by Sterling T — 28 May 2008
I'm a huge Miike fan, so I can find something to like in just about all of his movies. There is absolutely nothing new in this film. There's the typical gang fight in the rain which seems to make it into almost every Asian film these days. The plot is pretty much like Volcano High, except they don't fight the teachers.
Still there's a charming, hopeful energy to this film. The message is one of anti-violence, but framed realistically. Throughout human history it seems it is those who have truly experienced violence that truly understand the futility of it. I believe this is Genji's journey + the discovery his father is hoping he makes.
