Review of Croupier (1998) by Mark S — 10 Dec 2011
How can anyone not like such a simple and powerful movie? The first feature length film starring Clive Owen, who in this film, looks so much like a Sean Connery lookalike, you smack yourself repeatedly wondering how this man could NOT be cast as James Bond.
Owen plays Jack Manfred, a down-on-his-luck aspiring writer in need of a job. His father calls from South Africa and urges him to take a position he has arranged for him at a London casino, a trip which involves Jack selling his car and commuting for hours on public transport.
But the job is well paid, and Jack soon becomes one of the best dealers there, making his sorties with a fellow lady croupier (Hardie) and a mysterious gambler (Alex Kingston of ER) even more mysterious.
In the end, Jack is determined to write about his own life through the lens of a detached author-observer. But how much of Jack's life has become his written idea, and not reality?
