Review of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000) by Peter A — 08 Aug 2013
A beautiful film overall with something for nearly everyone to enjoy. The action takes classic kung fu film fights to new heights (literally) with fantastic and fantastical sword fights. The plot is dense with layers of meaning.
But the story can be a little complicated, especially for those unfamiliar with courtly behavior in imperial China. Despite that, it's not difficult to follow. Chow Yun-Fat and Michele Yeoh have one of the best on-screen romances in film in that theirs is mostly unrequited; a bittersweet love based on mutual respect.
It's worth multiple viewings.
