Review of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000) by Frog B — 29 Jan 2010

This was a "first" film for me in a few aspects. It was the first movie I saw to feature actress Zhang Ziyi, of whom I think is one of the most beautiful actresses in cinema to date. It was the first movie I had seen from director Ang Lee; and it was my first Martial Arts film.

In order to enjoy this movie you don't even have to like movies of this genre because its not a typical Martial Arts film. It has a terrific cast featuring such actors as Chow Yun-Fat, Michelle Yeoh, Zhang Ziyi, and even Cheng Pei-Pei from "Come Drink With Me" portrays the villainous Jade Fox.

The visuals are stunning and manage to be original enough considering the genre. The fight in the bamboo trees has yet to be repeated in any other film. Though in terms of stunning visuals, perhaps "Hero" could give it a run for its money.
