Review of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000) by Jason R — 02 Jan 2011
Great movie that showed that martial arts are an art and mainstreamed it for a worldwide audience. The movie is beautifully shot and the wire work is amazing. Seeing it in the theater, it took the audience a while to realize that the fighting wasn't suppose to be "earthbound" and that the fighters were using a mystical method.
Like Star Wars or even Pulp Fiction, the movie feels like it is part of something bigger (it is the fourth novel in a series of novels written by Wang Dulu) so the characters have depth and backstory that goes beyond the story told on the screen.
There is a little lag in the desert scene (but it also introduces the story central to the ending). Also like Star Wars & Pulp Fiction, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon had a lot of influence on movies that came after it.
..most not as good that can cast a bad shadow on a great film.
