Review of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000) by Spyros T — 13 Sep 2012
I've not seen many wuxia film in my life but Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is probably the best I've seen so far. No other could top the action and beauty of this film. Other wuxia films like Once Upon a Time in China were good, but they were a little.
.. er, ridiculous. Don't get me wrong, I was entertained, but I wanted something with more passion, something on a bigger scope that wasn't just an excuse for fight scenes. While the story is somewhat formulaic, the screenplay seems to hold more than what it appears to.
It weaved many different themes together brilliantly. You had revenge, love, humor, martial arts and fantasy combined in a beautifully shot, well acted film. I also enjoyed the open to interpretations ending of the film.
