Review of Crossing Over (2009) by Ceph J — 13 Jun 2009
This movie was only seen in limited release this year and I do not know why. It is very similar to 'Crash' in that an ensemble cast delivers a series of stories that are interwoven. Not all the good guys prevail and not all the bad guys are punished. The plot is tight but still complex enough to keep you guessing.
My only complaint was that Ashley Judd was underutilized a bit, but then I'm in love with her so my judgment is not clear.
Harrison Ford is an aging Immigration Agent with a serious case of moral angst. Cliff Curtis delivers an almost overwhelming performance as a highly conflicted Iranian immigrant, and he is also in one of the best action scenes I've seen in years. Ray Liotta is always good as a bad guy and as an unethical, but in the end, government functionary in love he really delivers.
I found this a very good movie about a very complex topic. It is not preachy other than to say the situation with illegal immigrants in America is not as cut and dried as some would have us believe.
