Review of Cross of Iron (1977) by Sean D — 22 Oct 2009
This came in under the radar for me. I had no idea Sam Peckinpah made a war film, more surprising a war film about Germans on the russian front. A solid cast, with James Coburn as Corporal Steiner, who is the much respected platoon leader.
I say Platoon lead figuratively, they're more like friends which makes this differ from most contemporary war films. Again Peckinpah's frenetic editing makes itself well known here and can be too much in the battle scenes.
It's a sad and sometimes heartbreaking film to watch and the ending doesn't do much to help. However, that what makes this film solid for me. A bold film with a ending credit sequence that will chill you to the bone.
