Review of Crooked House (2017) by Steve P — 12 May 2018
Guess Dame Judi and Dame Maggie and Phyllida Law and Diana Rigg and all the other senior women actors in Britain who could have played Auntie Edith with a genuine accent were busy. I like Glenn Close, but the constant accent slippage was annoying.
Even more annoying was the really dark cinematography. I get that it's an old mansion, but the story is set in the 1950's not the 1750's. They had overhead electric light. In a billionaire's house, I'm sure they could actually afford to have it turned on.
The endless gloom wasn't atmospheric, it was just dreary, (and will date the film dreadfully, since it's very much a current fad). For the most part, the film is okay, but it's terribly po-faced and the complete absence of servants in a house that size is simply ridiculous.
Could the film company not afford a few extras to lurk around in servants' gear? Generally - it wasn't terrible, but not really worth venturing to a cinema to see it. Kind of a wasted ticket price.
