People should really be more careful with ancient relics. Especially when a crazed old man with a caveman-like goon, his son no less, is after that object and after you and your life and whatever ungodly curse you've set loose all thanks to messing around with an ancient relic! An insectoid ancient relic that come to life and gives your orgasmic thrills and upgrades your old self into zombie-vampire with a granchild to look after.
Life can be so mysterious sometimes. Thing is if characters knew better half the time we'd be out of plenty of good stories be they real or pure fantasy. Guillermo del Toro's clumsy fantasy story unfolds with classic horror atmosphere and the love that accompanies his trademark gothic families.
His work here is entertaining but much richer and assured in his recent Spanish language films.
