Directorial debut from Guillermo Del Toro and a fine start he makes here.
An unusual take on the vampire myth, in this case it is an alchemists device that passes on the thrist for blood etc.
This is a very moody and atmospheric tale, very much character based, I especially liked the relationship between Jesus Gris and his grand daugher which was really moving.
While this is not quite up there with the magnificent Pan's Labyrinth you can see the pieces being put into place as Del Toro learns his craft.
Visually very nice to watch and the music is excellent and adds to the atmosphere and subtle, deliberate pacing.
Excellent. Well worth seeing.
