Review of Cronos (1993) by Bethany F — 14 Oct 2008

Cronos was nothing like what I had expected it to be.

It essentially was a radically different vampire film, well it eventually ended up that way.

This film was so gorgeously plotted out.

The sets were so extravagant and the costumes were beautifully fitted to each character.

The music was also extremely well done.

I thought that all the characters were very well played and that the film was interesting int he fact that the language of the film was somewhat split down the middle, it go from English to subtitles on an off even though all the characters clearly spoke English.

I thought Ron Perlman was really good in this film, and probabley the only source of entertainment this film got.. humor was that is.

His character was obscure and also either very like able or extremely repulsive.

There were a few unanswered questions for me, but I suppose the film was thriving on those things, because even the characters who knew the answers weren't going to tell the audience what they knew.

I did wonder where the insect in the Cronos device came from, which was never really addressed, and how it was able to live as long as it had inside the golden casing.

I thought the skin peeling idea was really strange and over the top, I've never seen a makeup effect like that where it wasn't show full out just being ripped from the character, it was slowly peeled in chunks during the final half of the film, which made it almost gross especially since the grandfather was with his grand daughter and all this was happening.

Its never likely to see a film where a child actor or actress nowadays can pull of a dramatic scene, so it was nice to see another scary film that proved me wrong in that aspect.

Beautifully shot, acted and composed.

Really worth seeing.
