Review of Cronos (1993) by Heather M — 04 Feb 2010
A very small film that feels so but none the less Guillermo Del Toro has managed to create something truly memorable with a unique and worthy take on the vampire genre which made 2009's Let The Right One In so great.
Narrowly focused on a small group of characters, Cronos is dark and horrifying at the same time whilst the relationship between Jesus Gris and Aurora contrasts the purity of the love shared between grandparent and grandchild with horrifying impact the Cronos device has.
Sometimes it is a very disturbing experience; a bloodfilled scene in a bathroom is hard to watch, but the make-up effects are outstanding and some moments are indeed very gory and even darkly comic. A chilling film to behold but quite an experience at the same time.
