Review of Cronos (1993) by Bob L — 27 Oct 2010
One of Del Toros earlier pieces that adds yet another fresh spin on the vampire theme. Cronos is a clockwork device that makes the recipient immortal, with a side effect of the thirst for blood. The centre of this is a nice, elderly antiques dealer who doesn't want the gift, but finds himself in a struggle for it with an 'evil corporate' and his son - nicely portrayed in a strange mixture of Spanish and English by Ron Perlman.
The grandchild that helps the antiques dealer is eerily silent throughout and the film which becomes more about the characters battle than the device (of which you are told very little), and displays the start of what would become Del Toros ongoing own style of fantasy.
Beautifully detailed and nicely acted, if a little slow.
