Review of Cronos (1993) by Sarah E — 03 Dec 2010
Cronos is a genuinely creepy movie with a disturbing plot device (literally) and some very unsavoury characters who'll do anything to get their hands on it. This is del Toro's first venture into the world of vampires, and it's a very successful one.
Nobody sparkles in this movie, not even in a metaphorical or poetic sense. The protagonist, an elderly antique dealer, becomes transformed by the venom secreted an insectoid broach known as the cronos device.
He becomes younger, but only so long as he feeds on the blood of the living. His only ally is his young granddaughter, who takes it upon herself to protect him at first, and then stand by his side unto the bitter end.
Not perfect, but still a very strong first film.
