Hunting for a new and entertaining take on an old horror standard, then your in luck, Cronos is definitely the movie you are hunting for.
Cronos is an imaginative take on the vampire mythos. The acting is decent, but not impressive, and the script is ordinary. What makes this movie special is that this is the first feature film of one of the greatest horror directors of our time, Guillermo Del Toro.
The story is a fresh take on vampires, not like those movies for tweens that have come out recently. This story has grit and horror appeal, the backstory and the way the person becomes a vampire, is fresh. Although visually appealing, the gruesomeness is lacking for a good horror film.
The acting is not oscar worthy, but still serves its needs. Ron Perlman is the man and does an excellent portrayal of a man obsessed with his nose, I know that doesn't make too much sense, but watch it and you will agree. The rest of the cast is nothing special, but again, they move the movie along.
The script handles the theme as best it could, you could definitely see Del Toro cutting his teeth with this film. The dialogue seems forced, but not to the point where it becomes tedious. It is a script of a b-horror movie.
The directing is something to pay attention to in this film, as it is Guillermo Del toro's first entry into feature films. It is definitely not his best work, but it clearly shows the viewer his prowess for handling horror.
Your hunt for an entertainingly original horror film should end with this film. Enjoy the film and keep alert as you never know when a new hunt will commence.
