Review of Cronos (1993) by Jesse O — 31 Aug 2011
Excellent vampire movie. It's almost like The Fly of vampire movies, only with this movie not being as much of a tragedy. But the vampire mythos is used to create a drama, instead of horror. And it works wonderfully, the movie is well written and intelligent.
It's probably more character driven than future Del Toro films, with the exception of El Espinazo del Diablo. While his movies, typically, have strong characters, they are more driven by the visual style and the fantasy aspects that his movies tend to have.
Of course, Federico Luppi is wonderful in his role and he brings a sort of class to the part with his presence and his charisma. The movie doesn't rely on violence and gore, which makes this movie all the more impressive.
While this movie may not be Guillermo's best, it's essential viewing if you're a fan of his (which I am) and it's among the best vampire movies ever made, so it's a must watch no matter how you look at it.
