Review of Critters (1986) by Dougal S — 21 Mar 2010
Well here we go - another 80s flick to bring that nice retro feel. A typical low budget B-movie that is perfect fun for a nostalgic post pub viewing.
More than a little 'inspired' by Gremlins, here we get a bunch of cuddly bt psychotic aliens who crash land on earth (in the American Mid-West of course) and proceed to attack and lay siege to a farm and it's inhabitants. Meanwhile a couple of shape changing bounty hunters are trashing the nearby town in search of them.
You don't really need to engage any mental faculties to enjoy this - just put it on and revel in the golden age of video fare. The action is pretty standard teen stuff and the blood is kept to a minimum. The critters themselves only really turn up in the second half and play it for Gremlin style sight gags, and conveniently all look the same (presumably saving on costs). The plot is a minor irrelevance (why exactly should these escaped space criminals decide to wage war on the nearest farmhouse isn't explained) but is a fun filled romp with plenty of explosions.
And one of the bounty hunters disguises himself as an 80s MTV rocker complete with big hair which is always good.
The question is why don't they make films like this any more?
