Review of Crimson Tide (1995) by Sanna L — 30 Jul 2009
Another mediocre submarine film. Another US submarine with a trigger-happy captain and an underwater cat-and-mouse game with nuclear missiles. Add a crew of pretty good (and later rather famous) actors and some indeed Tarantino-ish dialogue. Thank god there are no russians in this one. Otherwise you might've been watching The Hunt For Red October all over again.
About the actors I have to say I was a tad irritated byt the mannerisms of especially Hackman and Gandolfini. When you want someone to play an old, simple red-neck SOB, call Hackman. And really what Gandolfini did here was Tony Soprano in an uniform. True, The Sopranos wasn't happening back then but it bugged me anyway that the guy seems to be stuck at the same role. And Viggo Mortensen looks and sounds like a wuss without the beard (as he had as Aragorn in LOTR). But at least Denzel Washington was good.
