Review of Crimson Tide (1995) by Harry W — 09 Dec 2012
Unlike many other Tony Scott films, Crimson Tide never does anything but enhance the drama of the situation presented to it, rather than adding action to it. It makes use of great filmmaking techniques and a thrilling atmosphere to turn it into a underwater war film, way better than the adaptation of The Hunt for Red October.
Crimson Tide makes use of excellent film editing and quality cinematography to make it look proper.
It also features an astounding musical score that was absolutely defining of the dramatic themes in Crimson Tide and was unforgettable.
Another high point was the excellent screenplay which was never anything but necesarry and good quality, and even consisting of a touch of Quentin Tarantino. It was a more real version of Naval Soldier events and theire language, and was never stupid or fake. It even had good moments of Cracking Humour in there.
Crimson Tide is one of the greatest films Tony Scott's greatest films, because he provides a film with an excellent level of intensity as well as perfect casting and film editing and even some imposed symbolism. Crimson Tide is one of the films that he must be remembered for.
Crimson Tide also features excellent acting from Denzel Washington and Gene Hackman who made a great on-screen duo and had great chemistry.
Denzel Washington delivered his lines with the utmost confidence and finesse, and gave a certain feeling of strength to the film.
Gene Hackman was sort of an old war fellow who has been there and is going back, so his character is good, but Gene Hackman's performance made it one step better. He made the film that little bit more intense.
The only real downside would be the simplicity of the plot which is only minor because the justice Tony Scott does to all the other film's themes is sufficient in compensating for that. Sometimes it's an issue, but if you overlook it then you can very much enjoy Crimson Tide. I know I did.
