Review of Crimson Tide (1995) by M H — 10 Jul 2012
This was a tense film and was well-acted. What I particularly liked about is that the central conflict was not between the USS Alabama and the enemy ship but between a soldier's duty to obey lawful orders and the duty to disobey unlawful ones. Further, there was conflict over whose orders, the Captain's (Hackman) or the XO's (Washington), was the lawful order.
It may be a testiment to the performances but while Washington is clearly meant to be the good guy, I didn't see Hackman as a particularly bad guy. At worst, he is a well-intentioned extremist.
