Review of Crimson Peak (2015) by Mike S — 03 Nov 2015
Early in the film, when Edith (Mia Wasikowska) is having her manuscript looked at by a publisher, he mentions that her story is a ghost story, to which she replies, "Not really, its a story, with ghosts in it".
This sums up Crimson Peak itself, a story, which just happens to have ghosts in it.
The problem is, that the supernatural elements of the film serve no real purpose and just help drag out the run time, which is certainly not needed. Take those elements away and you're left with a drama about a sneaky family and a naive rich girl.
The film plays its cards very close to its chest, however, the problem is, the hand its holding is not a full house or four of a kind, but at best, 2 pair. The film tries, like The Woman in Black before it, to be an old fashioned horror film, with modern technology, but in the end, like Woman In Black, it fails to find the tone and creepiness that good old fashioned horror films were made with.
Wasikowska, Hiddleston and Chastain all put in good performances, but by the end, the film leaves you feeling a bit numb and drained from the dusty and dreary set pieces.
Ghosts are real, this we know to be true. They just don't have any impact.
