Review of Crimson Peak (2015) by Dharma — 19 Oct 2015
There are two types of films that Guillermo Del Toro makes: his somber, brilliant horror films, usually low budgeted and in Spanish, and his Hollywood style opuses, such as Hellboy and Pacific Rim. On the latter, Del Toro shows you his sharp eye for production design, and create detailed, intricate 'blockbusters' that are sadly more style than substance.
Crimson Peak is an attempt to create a 'marriage' between his two body of works...it failed on some level. Again, the production design is brilliant, costuming impeccable. The main character is obviously the house.
..an incredible creation that deserved at least an Oscar nomination. The bad thing: straight forward plotting, which I will not divulge here, contains 'twists and turns' that are predictable. Surprisingly, I felt that the whole film felt rushed and not enough emotional connection is established between Hiddleston and Wasikowska.
Chastain as per usual is brilliant...but again, the film could have been more...it could have been a classic...Alas, it was not meant to be...
